For many lady golfers, building consistency on the course starts with the absolute fundamentals. While it’s easy to focus entirely on your swing speed or follow-through, one of the most overlooked elements of a great shot is how you actually connect with the club.
In this quick tutorial, PGA Professional Zoe North breaks down the basics of the perfect golf club grip.
How to Perfect Your Golf Grip
1. Fingers, Not Palms
The first thing to look at is where the club is sitting in your hands. A common mistake is letting the club handle slide up into the fleshy part of your palms, which restricts your wrist movement and reduces power.
The Setup: Ensure the club runs directly through your fingers rather than resting in your palms.
The Benefit: Gripping with your fingers allows your wrists to hinge naturally during your swing, giving you much better control and clubhead speed.
2. Check Your Knuckles
Once your hands are on the club, you need a quick visual check to confirm your alignment is neutral and balanced.
The Setup: Look down at your hands. You should be able to see exactly two knuckles visible on your left hand, and two knuckles visible on your right hand.
The Benefit: This ensures your hands are perfectly mirrored and working together as a single unit, preventing the clubface from twisting mid-swing.
3. Point the "Vs" to Your Shoulders
The final check is all about the positioning of your thumbs and forefingers.
The Setup: When you close your hands around the grip, the crease between your thumb and index finger creates a "V" shape on each hand. Make sure the "V" on both your left and right hand is pointing upward toward your shoulders.
The Benefit: Aligning these lines correctly keeps your hands in a strong, neutral position, which promotes a squarer clubface at impact for much straighter shots.
