Is it just me, or has winter arrived out of nowhere? The clocks going back certainly doesn't help, and I probably feel it even more having been soaking up 27-degree sunshine in the Algarve just ten days ago, but we seem to have gone from an Indian summer to wet and windy in the blink of an eye!
You know what that means, I’m about to start preaching about why we all need to keep playing and protect our swings over the next few months. Heading into the festive season is no excuse! It reminded me of this article by Emma Booth on why winter golf isn't something to fear, but something to actively look forward to.
Take the Pressure Off: The Joy of 9-Hole Winter Golf
To be honest, I need the reminder just as much as anyone, I’m well known for being a fair-weather golfer. The key is not to put too much pressure on ourselves. With fewer daylight hours and conditions turning colder, there’s no rule saying you have to play a full 18 holes. Enjoying time outdoors matters far more than freezing our fingers off or getting caught up in slow weekend play. If you can, it’s best to try and pick a quieter window in the week, wrap up warm, and simply head out for 9 holes to keep the swing ticking over.
Golfers Are Made in the Off-Season
Emma believes golfers are made in the off-season, and one of the main reasons for that hinges on the quality of our practice. I’ll admit I used to be guilty of grabbing 75 balls and rushing through each shot, ingraining bad habits rather than doing things properly. These days, I’m much better at keeping practice purposeful, picking specific targets to actually work on my swing. It’s a good reminder that we don’t need marathon range sessions, just enough focused effort to create the tiny gains that turn into serious improvements down the line.
You might be someone who genuinely loves practising, but let’s face it, most of us don't. Ranges and practice grounds are rarely overflowing with women in the height of summer, let alone in the depths of winter!
Making Winter Practice Fun and Purposeful
If the thought of practice does leave you cold, Emma suggests spicing up your routine with a few clever training aids. You don't have to break the bank, either. Whether it’s simple alignment sticks, a swing trainer to work on your tempo and speed, or a putting mat to keep your stroke sharp in the warmth of your living room, having a specific tool gives each drill a clear purpose and keeps boredom at bay. If one turns up under the Christmas tree, at least pretend you’re thrilled - your swing will thank them later, even if your festive spirit doesn't!
So, let's stay positive about the season ahead. Let's keep our swings going, continue to enjoy our golf, and don't forget, there is plenty of new winter golf fashion to explore... and now that is exciting!
