Club Selection Around The Green

Club Selection Around The Green

There are three fundamental clubs you need to learn when playing in the green.

  1. Gap Wedge: a higher lofted club.
  2. 9 Iron: a medium lofted wedge.
  3. 7 Iron: lower lofted club.

Gap wedges allow the ball to "pop higher" which is great for "carrying" the ball over obstacles (like bunkers or tall grass) because the higher loft stops the ball quickly on the green.

9 irons mean the ball rises a lower but allows a little roll on the ball. This is a great middle-ground for when you have some green to work with but still need a bit of height to clear the fringe

7 irons have very low trajectory with lots of roll. This is good for treating your club like a putter to get the ball rolling on the ground as soon as possible.

Greenside chip shots

During the winter months, or after heavy rain, chipping the ball onto the green can be tricky. In the above tutorial, Zoe North provides a few tips and tricks to help improve your ball striking around the green, and keep your par down.
