Zoe North: The Essential Guide to Driver Setup

Zoe North: The Essential Guide to Driver Setup

For many newcomers to the game, the driver can feel like the most intimidating club in the bag. However, a great drive doesn't start with a fast swing, it starts with a solid foundation. In this quick tutorial, Zoe North breaks down the three core pillars of a perfect driver setup specifically tailored for female players to help you achieve more distance and better consistency.

1. Precision Ball Positioning

Unlike your irons, the driver requires a unique ball position to ensure you catch the ball at the right moment.

  • The Setup: Position the ball so it is directly opposite the inside of your lead (front) foot.
  • Pro Tip: Try slightly turning your lead foot outward. This simple adjustment opens up your hips, allowing for a smoother, fuller rotation through the ball. This is key for generating effortless power.

2. Building a Powerful Stance

Stability is the secret to a successful drive. If your base is too narrow, you'll lose balance; if it's too wide, you'll struggle to shift your weight.

  • The Setup: Set your feet at least shoulder-width apart.
  • The Benefit: This wider base provides the athletic stability needed to maintain your balance while creating the leverage required for a powerful, high-launching drive.

3. Optimising Shoulder Tilt

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is trying to hit "down" on the ball like an iron. To get the best results from your driver, you want to hit the ball on the "up-swing."

  • The Setup: At address, your trailing shoulder should be slightly lower than your lead shoulder, creating a subtle upward tilt.
  • The Benefit: This tilt naturally encourages an upward strike, which reduces spin and increases "carry" distance, helping the ball stay in the air longer.
